Manitoba Driving Rules – Overview

Manitoba drivers must follow traffic laws set by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) and the Highway Traffic Act. These rules cover speed limits, right-of-way, road signs, signals, seat belts, and safe driving practices.

1. Speed Limits
  • School zones: 30 km/h when children are present or during posted hours

  • Urban streets (built-up areas) without posted signs: 50 km/h

  • Rural roads: 90 km/h unless otherwise posted

  • Highways / expressways: 100 km/h unless otherwise posted

  • Always adjust speed for weather, traffic, and road conditions

2. Right-of-Way Rules
  • Vehicles must yield to traffic on the right at uncontrolled intersections

  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks

  • Yield to emergency vehicles using sirens or flashing lights

  • When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic

  • Stop for school buses with flashing red lights (in both directions unless separated by a median)

3. Traffic Signs and Signals
  • Regulatory signs (e.g., stop, yield, speed limit) must be obeyed

  • Warning signs (e.g., curves, pedestrian crossings, slippery roads) alert drivers to hazards

  • Guide signs provide directions, distances, or services

  • Traffic lights:

    • Green = proceed if safe

    • Yellow = prepare to stop

    • Red = stop completely

    • Flashing red = stop like a stop sign

    • Flashing yellow = proceed with caution

  • Pedestrian signals: Cross only when the walking figure is shown

4. Seat Belts and Child Safety
  • All occupants must wear seat belts

  • Drivers are legally responsible for properly securing children

5. Impaired and Distracted Driving
  • Learner and novice drivers: zero tolerance for alcohol or drugs

  • Handheld mobile devices prohibited while driving

  • Fatigue, distraction, or substance use can result in fines, demerit points, or license suspension

6. Safe Driving Practices
  • Maintain a safe following distance (at least 2 seconds in normal conditions, more in bad weather)

  • Use turn signals before changing lanes or turning

  • Check mirrors and blind spots frequently

  • Adjust driving for weather conditions (snow, ice, rain)

  • Anticipate hazards and drive defensively

7. Parking Rules
  • Do not park in no-parking zones, fire lanes, or crosswalks

  • Parallel parking is required in urban areas

  • Always check signage for time limits and restrictions


8. Other Important Rules
  • Stop for railway crossings when warning signals are activated

  • Obey construction and temporary road signs

  • Keep a safe distance from cyclists and pedestrians

  • Use headlights from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, and in poor visibility
