G1 Traffic Rules (Ontario)

G1 Traffic Rules are basic driving laws you must know and follow to pass the G1 written test and to drive safely in Ontario.

1. Speed Limits

  • Follow posted speed limits at all times

  • School zones and residential areas usually have lower limits

  • Adjust speed for weather, traffic, and road conditions

2. Traffic Lights & Signals

  • Red light: Stop completely

  • Yellow light: Prepare to stop (stop if safe)

  • Green light: Go only when the intersection is clear

  • Flashing red: Stop and proceed when safe

  • Flashing green: Left turn permitted

3. Stop & Yield Rules

  • Stop sign: Come to a full stop; proceed when safe

  • Yield sign: Slow down and give right-of-way

  • Stop before the white line or crosswalk

4. Right-of-Way Rules

  • Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks

  • Yield to vehicles already in the intersection

  • At a 4-way stop, the first vehicle to stop goes first

  • When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic

5. Lane Rules

  • Stay in the right lane unless passing

  • Use the left lane for passing only on highways

  • Do not cross solid lines when prohibited

6. Turning Rules

  • Use turn signals at least 30 meters before turning

  • Turn from the correct lane

  • Left turns are allowed only when safe and legal

7. Pedestrian & School Safety

  • Always stop for school buses with flashing red lights

  • Yield to pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks

  • Watch carefully in school and playground zones

8. Seat Belts & Child Safety
  • All drivers and passengers must wear seat belts

  • Children must use proper car seats or booster seats

9. Alcohol, Drugs & Phones
  • Zero alcohol level for G1 drivers

  • No drugs or cannabis while driving

  • No use of handheld devices (phones)

10. G1 Licence Restrictions
  • Must drive with a fully licensed driver (G) beside you

  • No driving on 400-series highways

  • No driving between 12 a.m. – 5 a.m.
