🚗 Northwest Territories Driving Rules Test (Class 7)
📘 Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL)
New drivers in the Northwest Territories start in the Graduated Driver Licensing Program, which has three stages:
Class 7 – Learner’s Licence
Class 5 – Probationary Licence
Full Class 5 Licence
You must complete each stage before moving to the next.
🧾 Who Can Take the Test
Minimum age: 15 years old
You need:
Valid photo ID
Proof of NWT residency
Parental/guardian consent if under 18
📝 Written Knowledge Test
Taken in person at a Driver and Vehicle Office
About 30 minutes
Two sections:
20 road rules questions
20 road signs questions
You must score at least 80% in each section
No more than 4 mistakes per section

Traffic laws and safe driving rules
Right-of-way rules
Speed limits
Road signs and signals
Learner licence restrictions
Alcohol and drug rules
Penalties and demerit points
✅ After You Pass
You will receive a Class 7 Learner’s Licence and must follow these rules:
Drive only with a fully licensed driver who has at least 2 years of experience
Zero blood alcohol level
Usually no driving between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Must hold the learner’s licence for at least 12 months
